Chestnuts Full of Vitamins

Did you know that chestnuts are the only nuts containing vitamin C? Although it may not seem like it yet, cold winter evenings are approaching. You can make them more pleasant by roasting chestnuts, which is easier than you think.

Chestnuts are mainly associated with the Christmas season. They are grown in temperate regions of Europe and North America, where they enjoy frost, snow, and sun. However, they are also cultivated in other parts of the world, such as Australia. In our country, we even have the Protected Area Jelenecká Chestnut Grove near Nitra, which is the oldest and most beautiful artificially established stand of edible chestnut in Slovakia.

How to eat chestnuts?

Chestnuts are versatile and fulfill their role in various dishes. You can enliven pasta, rice, and soups by adding chestnuts, while adding chestnuts to puddings, bread, or cookies offers a true delight. Roasting is the ideal way to fully enjoy them.

Nothing easily compares to the aroma of roasting chestnuts. Chestnuts are best consumed steamed, boiled, dried, or most commonly roasted. Read on to learn how to roast chestnuts.

Before roasting, chestnuts should be rinsed and dried. A small slit should be made on the surface or the shell should be torn.
Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Roast chestnuts in small batches for 10–20 minutes. Transfer them to a kitchen towel.
Alternatively, you can boil chestnuts in a pot of water for about 6 minutes. Whether roasting or boiling, chestnuts are very difficult to peel. Use gloves and peel them as soon as possible. They peel best when still relatively warm, which also protects the outer and inner shell.

What are the health benefits of chestnuts?

Chestnuts have a high content of vitamin C, fiber, and fatty acids, and contain fewer calories than other nuts, consuming their healthy oils. They are also a source of iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

Horse chestnuts may resemble sweet chestnuts but are smaller and should not be eaten. On the other hand, they are useful in a different way. They can be used to dry wet footwear. If you have soaked leather boots or shoes, chop or crush them finely and place them inside the shoes. Your shoes will dry faster.
